Are there people who can’t feel pain?
Some people are born without being able to feel pain! This is called congenital analgesia, also known as congenital insensitivity to pain.
This is actually an extremely dangerous condition. It is not uncommon for patients with this condition to die in childhood due to injuries or illnesses going unnoticed.
Patients with this condition can still feel touch, but not temperature, and do not interpret extreme touch as pain.
The exact cause of this condition is not clear, but it may be from increased production of endorphins in the brain. This would be caused by a genetic mutation. In some situations the medication naloxone can be given for treatment (this medicine is typically given to opioid addicts).
There is one village in Sweden with nearly 40 people affected!
