Do isometric exercises burn any calories?

Can a workout be done at a desk, or sitting on a plane?  Isometric exercises are a way of exercising while staying in a seat or waiting in line at the store.

Isometrics are not a substitute for traditional exercise, but is a way to fit in a few exercises in only a few minutes to strengthen the muscles.

Some simple isometric exercises include pressing the palms together as hard as possible for a minute, tightening the abdominal muscles, and pulling the shoulders back while straightening the spine, which also helps posture.  There are many different types of isometric exercises which can be performed.

Do isometric exercises burn any calories?  On average, if a person performed stomach contractions for three minutes, it would burn about 16 calories.



A recent study also showed that isometric exercises can also help lower blood pressure.
