May is better sleep month!

May is better sleep month, so here are some fun sleep facts:

The average person sleeps 6.8 hours a night.  That is a full hour less than people slept 50 years ago!

Sleep experts recommend 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

People who are over 65 get the most sleep, with 67% getting seven or more hours per night.  Nearly half of 18- to 29-year-olds get less than the recommended amount of sleep.
What happens if we don’t get enough sleep?  Lack of sleep affects our memory, concentration, immune system, and increases the risk of accidents.
The world record for not sleeping is held by Randy Gardner.  When he was a high school student in 1964, he stayed awake for 264.4 hours (11 days 24 minutes).  Researchers studied him during this time, and found that he had serious cognitive and behavioral changes, with paranoia and hallucinations.   On the eleventh day, when he was asked to subtract seven repeatedly starting with 100, he stopped at 65. When asked why he had stopped he said that he had forgotten what he was doing.
