Nicotine is a stimulant found in the leaves of the nightshade family of plants.

Nicotine is highly addictive.  It passes through the lungs and binds to receptors in the brain.

Here is how nicotine amounts compare in different products:

Cigarette:  1 -14 mg per cigarette

Cigar:  100-200 mg per cigar

Smokeless tobacco (chew or snuff):   4-16 mg per use

Electronic cigarette (e cigarette vaping):  9-16 mg per 1 ml dose  (this varies widely)

Hookah:  12.5 mg per bowl

Products used to treat nicotine addiction:

Nicotine Patch :  15-21 mg/24 hour patch

Nicotine gum:  2 mg per piece
