Coming soon to a hospital near you: Robots that will clean hospital rooms.
Special robots are being deployed to kill germs that cause infections for hospitalized patients. After a room is washed down by the hospital housekeeping team, the robots are wheeled in.
The robots emit ultraviolet (UV) rays that kill germs that are on hospital room surfaces. The UV rays can even kill germs that are on curtains, doors, and in drawers.
The UV rays kill dangerous germs such as MRSA (methicillin-resistant staph aureus), VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci), and C. difficile.
A study on the robots showed that they can reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections by 30%.
The process takes about 25 minutes.
