Electronic health records have changed medical record keeping for everyone. Just 10 years ago, most patient records were handwritten and kept in a file, and now record keeping is almost all on the computer.
How many people can see your electronic health records? One study showed that up to 150 people now have access to at least a part of your medical record when you are in the hospital, and up to 600,000 healthcare providers, insurers and other entities have at least some access to your hospital and clinic health information.
Since 2009, there have been over 18,000,000 patients affected by having their records breached. The biggest cause of most of the breaches was caused by release of the information by clinic or hospital employees, which caused over 50% of the leaks.
